The Lean Startup: A Review of Eric Ries’ New Book

By Elizabeth Yin (Co-Founder, LaunchBit) I've read a lot of business books over the years -- for school, for *fun*, for work. Most of them are just ok -- largely intuitive and too high level to be useful. I wouldn't recommend most books I've read to anyone. But, I just finished reading a draft of Eric Ries' new book, The Lean Startup. This is a must read for all internet entrepreneurs and a compelling read for anyone who's ever wanted to cut waste out of new projects... including stuffing envelopes!

Finding Your Startup Co-Founder with FounderDating

By Sophie-Charlotte Moatti (SF Organizer, FounderDating) In the summer of 2009, FounderDating co-founder Jessica Alter was having coffee with long-time friend and venture capitalist Saar Gur. She was thinking of starting her own company and looking for a co-founder, someone just as brilliant as her but with a technical skillset. Jessica and Saar both were keenly aware that the best founding teams share the same goals and passion, and that they have very complementary skills.

Data 2.0: On Openness & Participation

By Emily Goligoski ("In Conversation" Video Producer, Women 2.0)

Among the many information discussions at Data 2.0 this week, we recognized:

It's important to focus on citizens’ responsibilities not just as voters, but as information advocates. The conference at UCSF started with a comparison of different cities’ offerings (with SF celebrating census data mashups, NY offering a way to filter the city’s checkbook, and Chicago bringing transparency to government contracts). The core theme? Much of this information wasn’t consolidated with public consumption in mind, and it's up to citizens to start optimizing it for public usage.

Why You Can(‘t) Recruit A Technical Cofounder

By Jennifer Chin (Co-Founder, LaunchBit) As a co-founder of LaunchBit, I've met plenty of non-technical people who want to launch web companies. Almost without a doubt, these people are all looking for technical co-founders to help them bring the dream to life. Unfortunately, finding a technical co-founder is not easy.

So, we at LaunchBit decided to poll potential technical co-founders to find out what was going through their heads when a non-technical person pitches them an idea. What would it take to convince a technical person to join your team? What should you say and what should you not say?

We compiled the responses in our blog post entitled Why you can('t) recruit a technical cofounder and some important factors and huge pet peeves became evident. For example, if you don't have a prior connection with a potential technical co-founder or if you aren't in the same location, not a big deal.
