Founder Labs selects about 15 hackers and engineers, designers, product and marketing mavens to begin to develop high-growth mobile ventures in NYC. You may apply individually. However, pairs or teams who want to work together and have not locked in their product or idea, may also apply. Founder Labs builds teams and validates ideas. Breaking Up With “Technology” Was the Best Thing I Did Before Love With Food

I spent the first 8 years of my career specializing in enterprise financial systems, and made a name for myself in the enterprise world. I've consulted and engineered many Fortune 500 financial systems (Sony, Fox, GM, etc). Counting money and being accountable for every penny seriously killed my love for technology and in 2007, I called it quits. I was so burnt out and sworn that I'll never ever be a software engineer again.

I left Silicon Valley with my passport and a backpack and hopped on the next flight to wherever! It was my "eat, pray, love" adventure to help get back my sanity and recover from my breakup with "technology".

Doing Good With a backpack and 12 months, I traveled through 20 countries. I met many wonderful people but also witnessed many living in poverty with no clean water or food. Seeing their hardship jolted me back to reality. With so much advancement in technology, why is hunger still an issue today? When I'm angry, it usually gets my brain juice flowing. I was motivated to explore more into social entrepreneurship.

How Women 2.0 Launched My Entrepreneurial Career

I had already started my first company, failed and was ready to do it again to make Zuckerberg’s success look like peanuts. I knew nothing about tech, but I knew that’s where I had to be. So I looked up as many tech events as I could find, printed the ugliest business cards you can imagine and began networking.

At one of those many events, I met Angie Chang. Angie turned out to be one of the founders of Women 2.0. She invited me to a wine and cheese event, as long as I promised to just eat the cheese. Of course, I had to check it out! At that event, I met Shaherose Charania and Jessica Mah. Both of whom would later turn out to be pivotal in my career.

Women 2.0 gets the scoop from Amita Paul (pictured, right) on the exciting acquisition and her entrepreneur's story.

Women 2.0: A few months ago, you presented Objective Marketer at Women 2.0 PITCH Night. What stage was your company in then, and how did you get to where you are now?

Amita Paul: Objective Marketer was born out of my fascination for emerging media and passion for online marketing in general. Earlier on, I had managed product innovations in email and direct marketing - this experience was very helpful in visualizing the needs of email marketers as they transition to social media. I started ObjectiveMarketer in early 2009 with a public launch in September 2009. We had several enterprises, including Fortune 100 companies already executing their social media campaigns with ObjectiveMarketer even before the public launch.

How we developed a winning startup idea in five weeks

When we presented our Women 2.0 startup idea Tetherpad, a travel management solution for busy people, on the mobile Founder Labs Final Demo Night, we had no idea that it would be a crowd favorite. For five weeks, Dharini, Everett and I worked diligently on validating our problem/solution hypothesis and communicating our minimum viable product (MVP). The process was a huge learning experience.

As Everett's guest blog post on Women 2.0 Founder Labs suggested, our team went through a number of ups and downs. So when the esteemed panel of John Malloy, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, Dan Levine and Tim Connors picked Tetherpad as one of their top teams for a hypothetical next meeting, it was unanticipated and felt a bit surreal when the audience also picked us as their favorite. Personally, this was a huge validation. Five weeks ago, I did not know where to begin, let alone give advice to others.
