PITCH NYC 2012 Startup Competition: ActivityHero, CitizenMade, NewlyWish Nab Awards At PITCH Conference

Live from PITCH NYC 2012 Conference & Competition –
By Angie Chang (Co-Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Women 2.0)

At the 2012 PITCH NYC Conference, the 10 finalists presented live to a panel of investors serving as judges for the PITCH NYC 2012 Startup Competition. These finalists were selected from over 260 applications for PITCH NYC 2012 Startup Competition. Over 30 investors as judges evaluated the applications and selected these 10 finalists to present live during Global Entrepreneurship Week for prizes.

In the morning session, Clear Returns arrived from Glasgow to convince us (by dumpster diving, no less) that the retail return problem is an entrepreneurial venture, ActivityHero showed us that you can project manage your child(ren)’s activities better, The Muse demonstrated the appeal of company profiles for the modern-day job seeker, NewlyWish made us wish that all registries are cross-platform and benefit local SMBs and Maternova proved that a business can be established while improving maternal health globally.

In the afternoon session, Alike delighted the audience with a live demo of the newly launched product, EatDrinkJobs made the case for “Yelp for hospitality jobs”, Citizen Made drilled into us the difference between mass personalization and mass customization, Whit.li demonstrated the need for social media marketing through natural language processing and LightningBuy dazzled the crowd by suggesting their one-screen solution to the ancient 19-screen problem with mobile devices.

And the prizes for the PITCH NYC 2012 Startup Competition went to…

The first prize was a People’s Choice Award – a meeting with angel investor Joanne Wilson. This award was voted on Twitter and went to Chandini Ammineni and Peggy Chang of ActivityHero!

The next prize was awarded by Rachel Weiss, L’Oréal Vice President. She announced that the $25,000 grant from L’Oréal goes to Rachel Brooks and Bryn McCoy of Citizen Made!

This grant provides a year-long commitment from L’Oréal for coaching, mentorship and introductions to VC partners and L’Oréal brand leads for testing opportunities.

The grand prize of a meeting with Marc Andreessen of Andreessen Horowitz, a year of Rackspace hosting and an automatic TechStars NYC interview for the winter 2013 class was awarded to Amanda Allen, founder and CEO of NewlyWish!

Thanks to everyone for coming out to the inaugural Women 2.0 PITCH NYC Conference & Competition on November 14, 2012 – we look forward to a bigger and better event next year!
