Mediabistro's Laurel Touby Will Be A Live Judge At PITCH NYC Conference On November 14

PITCH NYC 2012 live competition judges include exited entrepreneur now investor/advisor Laurel Touby of Mediabistro fame!

By Angie Chang (Co-Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Women 2.0)

We’re a few weeks away from Women 2.0’s first PITCH Conference in New York – join us for a day full of successful women entrepreneurs sharing their stories of starting up and going big. Meet Laurel Touby, founder of Mediabistro. She sold her company to Jupitermedia for $23 million in July 2007 and is now investing in and advising various startups.

At PITCH Conference, Laurel Touby will be joining us as a judge for the PITCH Startup Competition as the top 10 women-led startups from the Women 2.0 community pitch onstage to investors for prizes.

About Mediabistro’s Laurel Touby:

  • The Village Voice called it “The $23 Million Boa” – Laurel feather boa habit started when someone told her to wear a feather boa to her events to be recognizable and approachable. She is known for her down-to-earth personality and habit of greeting every invitee and introducing them around.
  • A lesson in tenacity and owning what you have – Laurel held 64% of the stock in her company. So when she sold Mediabistro to Jupitermedia for $23 million in 2007, she netted a cool $12.4 million personally, reports the Village Voice. Now she is giving back to the community, advising and investing in companies.
  • Laurel’s business success is credited to a pivot – Whether you like the term pivot or not, former freelance writer Laurel pulled the company through two recessions, pivoted, managed growth with minimal resources, developed her audience online via social marketing and created new, money-making product lines.
