The X Chromosome: What Is The DNA Of Women-Led Startups?

By Pemo Theodore (Founder, Ezebis) For over a year, I have been video interviewing venture capitalists, angel investors and women founders trying to investigate the apparent shortfall in funding for women led technology startups.

My goal has been to listen to as many people as I could from both sides of the table, in order to get a diversity of opinions on this controversial subject.

Whilst I have been doing these interviews, many people have said to me that no problem exists and that women can be as easily funded as men if they have a great idea, team, plan and advisors. However the statistics show another story.

The Girl Effect And The Global Female Entrepreneurial Spirit

By Blake Landau (Blogger, What's Your Story) Most of us would agree that education leads to a better life. At a certain age we discover that with economic freedom comes true freedom. If a woman has her own money she has independence, she has choices, she has agency to move about as she pleases.

A woman with an education can support herself, can start a company, and decide the path of her choice.

Let’s meet Sanchita -- a prime example of how with a little support and resources, girls can be entrepreneurial and start businesses for themselves and for their family.

How Universities Fail Women Inventors, Confirm Gender Bias

By Angie Chang (Co-Founder & Editor-In-Chief, Women 2.0) Bloomberg's Scott Shane wrote about how studies have shown "Male academics are much more likely than their female counterparts to start companies to exploit their inventions".

He writes:

"To figure out whether licensing officers favor the inventions of male inventors for spinoff companies, some colleagues and I conducted an experiment with 239 technology licensing officers at 88 leading research universities.

We randomly assigned a male name and picture

Building A Team: What Can You Bring To The Table?

By Jean Hsu (Engineer, Obvious) Discussions about hiring so often revolve around what you should look for in a candidate and how to evaluate their technical abilities and if they will fit in with the existing team.

The market is currently incredibly competitive in favor of engineers, so I’d like to turn the tables around and ask what companies can bring to the table in this relationship.

Could Your Bootstrapped Startup Use A Few Good Moms?

By Kerry Bowbliss & Sherry Lombardi (Co-Founders, Hulafrog) Last year, we launched Hulafrog, a network of hyperlocal websites for moms. Each one is the “go-to” guide to life with kids around town. Hulafrog was born, like many startups, out of necessity. As new moms, we were on the never-ending quest for enriching activities and fun events for our kids and yearned for a simple way to find them. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a single website with everything from language lessons and soccer camps to parades and puppet shows to kid friendly restaurants and museums?

There wasn’t. So we built one. The prototype

A Venture Capitalist’s Take On 2011 Trends & What’s Next For 2012

By Jalak Jobanputra (Director, Omidyar Network) As a venture capitalist, I am privy to innovations long before they become mainstream, one of the things I love about my job. But even more exciting is when I see inflection points of adoption -- which is why 2011 was a particularly exhilirating year for me. Powered by cell phones and social networking platforms, we saw revolutions taking place, businesses being transformed

How I Started Something Borrowed NY Without A Technical Co-Founder (And Why I Want One Now)

By Brittany Haas (Co-Founder, Something Borrowed NY) It all started with four sisters. Being the youngest, I watched my older sisters struggle with buying a dress that cost them more than one month’s rent. Beyond the heartbreak of spending that much on one item, it can only be worn once, and you need to find space to store it in your 400 sq ft apartment.

Hence Something Borrowed NY was born. We wanted to rent designer bridal gowns from a store in NYC to brides like us; ones who loved high fashion, hated the price tag, and didn’t value the possession of a one-time wear item.

Am I The Female Zuckerberg? No, I’m The Next Busque.

We’ve all been compared to someone at some point. It’s often a physical comparison -- "you look just like so and so!" -- but sometimes it’s a reflection of similar personality traits, mannerisms, or behavior. However, it’s not often that someone is compared to one of the most famous people in the world. But, that’s the situation I found myself in a few weeks ago.

The best way to sum up my reaction when I first saw my head on Mark Zuckerberg’s body in the December 2011 issue of San Francisco Magazine -- surprised. I’m confident
