Kurtzig’s Return to Silicon Valley Highlights Women’s Lack Of Progress In Tech

By Chris O’Brien (Business & Technology Columnist, San Jose Mercury News) Before Silicon Valley had Larry Ellison or Steve Jobs, it had Sandra Kurtzig. By founding and taking public one of the region's first software companies almost four decades ago, she became an industry giant. The fact that she was the valley's lone female tech CEO also made her a pioneer for women, too.

Kurtzig, 64, recently announced that she had come out of retirement to take the helm of a new startup, almost 40 years after starting ASK Corp. And perhaps her biggest surprise -- and disappointment -- is that as she looks back at that trail she blazed

Moving Up Without Moving Out (Of Technology)

By Francine Gordon (Chair, SVForum Tech Women) Editor's note: This important topic will be discussed at SVForum's eponymous event on September 22 in Cupertino, CA - Details here.

It’s a sad reality that roughly a third of the women who enter the high tech workforce as a computer scientist or engineer move out off the technology track over time.

Given the fact that the number of women pursuing computer science degrees has been on the decline for some time and

How to Make the Most of Your Time and Energy

By Sarah Prevette (Founder, Sprouter) Time is arguably the most valuable asset of every entrepreneur — and can be hard to find enough time in the day to do everything you need to do keep your business running. Respond to e-mails, managing employees and customers, sourcing strategic partners and networking in your industry. It all takes time.

Work days can easily be burned through by being reactionary to inquiries, questions and requests. As you grow your business you’ll inevitably get an increasing number of interview requests from publications, meeting requests from new

Organizing ITU TELECOM WORLD 2011

By Katz Kiely (Event Curator, ITU TELECOM WORLD 2011) Telecom World is 40 years old this year. In February, I was invited to work with the ITU to shake it up and breathe fresh life into the old dame.

I accepted the gauntlet: how to start moving away from the traditional yet-another-talking-shop conference and start to re-position this influential global gathering as something more inspirational, more action based, more 21st Century.

Over the last 12 years, I have experimented with non-traditional formats. I have tried to figure out how essentially

Time is Slower and Faster At The Same Time: Reflections of My First Week as a Real Founder

By Kimberly Dillon (Founder, House of Mikko) So for those of you who didn’t know it, this week was my first week solo dolo. This was the first week in 12 years, in which I have not worked for someone else. Amazing because my email address which means “No More Cubicles” was penned in 2003, which means I have been working on working for myself for a long long time!

Surprisingly most people, especially former coworkers, have asked me what its like be able to sleep in. I usually responded with my trademark edlook of confusion. Are these people psycho? Sleeping in? I am not in college

Indonesian Female Founders: We Are Here

By Aulia Halimatussadiah (Co-Founder & CTO, NulisBuku) If you asked where are all the female founders in Indonesia, well, they're not far. They're already around, but they're yet to start a startup.

The potential is there. Indonesia is a country of 250 million people and 30 million of them are already connected to the Internet. Indonesia has the second largest population on Facebook, after the US. Indonesian women are highly active on social media channels to interact and make new friends. And they have good ideas about how to use social media and technology.

We Dream To Be The Best Place For Women To Work In The World

By Ale Lariu (Co-Founder, SheSays) Three months ago, I left my job at a big advertising agency: McCann Ericksson in New York. At McCann, I was SVP Group Creative Director and worked with clients like MasterCard, General Mills, Kohls, Nikon and Verizon. Because I was always at advertising agencies, I did not have other startups prior to this. But having said that, in the past two years, I personally helped and invested in startups from friends who could benefit from my marketing expertise.

I’m Brazilian, grew up in the Amazon jungle and lived in the UK for 13 years. I moved to London in 1994

Transcript: TechCrunch Disrupt “Women In Tech” Panel (Archives)

By Rachel Sklar (Founder, Change The Ratio) This Monday will see TechCrunch Disrupt kick off once again in San Francisco. Leaving aside the recent brouhaha about TechCrunch (get yourself caught up here and here here), it remains one of the most important and influential tech conferences around, lining up top-notch speakers, panels and attendees, making news and generating an epic number of tweets. That's why it was such a big deal for me to speak on an all-women panel at last year's event.

The "Women In Tech" panel at TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2010 was added

Kauffman: Three Things Entrepreneurs Do For Our Economy

By Angie Chang (Co-Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Women 2.0) The Kauffman Foundation proposes a "Startup Act" to jumpstart the U.S. economy and increase job creation by accelerating the growth of startups and young businesses.

The Startup Act references recent Kauffman data that proclaims while more firms have been created each year since the last recession began, the number of new firms with employees continues to drop (this is a trend that pre-dates the recession).

The Startup Act proposes changing government policy:

10 Things I’ve Learned About Customer Development

By Cindy Alvarez (Head of Products and Customer Development, KISSmetrics)

  1. Whatever people say they will pay for it is wrong.
  2. If someone says, “I wouldn’t personally use it, but I bet other people would”, no one will use it.
  3. The answer to any question that starts with “do you want” or “are you concerned about” will always be “yes”.
  4. If someone says “maybe it’s just me, but...” -- it’s not.... Read More...

And, Who Are You? The “I Am” Dilemma

By Nilofer Merchant (Contributing Writer, Harvard Business Review) Our titles are illusions and not reflective of one’s truth. This works both ways. I am not a grand pooh-bah if I have a fancy set of titles. And I am not a lowly piece of shit if I have a junior role within the organizational structure. And we don’t need to have our mobile voicemail message say I am so-and-so-of-such-and-such.

We are each more than our titles; we are each own unique selves. Letting go of these false exterior identities can be difficult and takes time, possibly our entire lifetime. But it starts with us realizing the falsity first, and then moving in the right direction
