Watch the video for Chiu-Ki's developer story of starting up Monkey Write at a hackathon. By Chiu-Ki Chan (Founder & Developer, Monkey Write)

AT&T recently interviewed me on how I built Monkey Write from a hackathon prototype to a full business. This got me thinking about the wonderful adventure I've been having in the past few months.

When I left Google to go to startups, I did so because I wanted to grow beyond coding, to get a holistic understanding of how products are built. Great products need more than just technology. What is the secret sauce? It took me a year and a half as a startup employee to realize the truth - there is no secret sauce.

There are theories and conjectures, but the only way

Starting A Women-Led Healthcare Or Life Science Startup?

By Joshua Henderson (Director of Programming, Springboard Enterprises) Several weeks ago, I wrote about resources available to high-growth, women-led companies.

Besides missing a few important organizations like SmartGirlsWay, NewME Accelerator, Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs, BlogHer Entrepreneurs and ACTiVATE, I said that we wanted to partner with non women-focused groups/events to champion more women through the funnel from idea to startup to exit.

5 Reasons Why Knowing How To Code Is Good For Entrepreneurs

By Alicia Liu (Co-Founder, RivalMetrics) This is a version of the lightning talk I gave at the Women Who Code Meet Up last month. It’s in the context of why startup founders should code, but can be applied to anyone on a small tech startup team.

#1 - Understand what is actually going on.

So you have validated your business idea, now you need to build it. When you code, you learn how long things take to implement. You know what’s hard to do, what’s not, what can be done with the team you have, what skills you lack and need to hire for.

Ask for compensation. Discuss salary. Negotiate. Be financially independent. By Leah Eichler (Contributing Writer, Femme-O-Nomics)

My first job in journalism, as an intern at a magazine in Jerusalem, paid approximately $500 a month. At the time I felt thrilled by the opportunity and promptly found a part-time job in retail to support my full-time job as a journalist but I think the consequences may have haunted me throughout my career.

Looking back, this wasn’t the only time I downplayed the importance of proper payment for work. Like many others, the topic of compensation makes me uncomfortable, especially when it relates to work I love.

The 5 Silent Career Killers For Women

Women fail to sell themselves, to the disadvantage of their careers. By Lauren Carlson (CRM Analyst, Software Advice)

A recent Harvard Business Review post explores certain behaviors of women that can hold them back in the professional arena. The article cites studies which show that only half of women display high self-confidence while the other half admit to feelings of self-doubt regarding their performance. As a result of this self-doubt and reduced confidence, women can end up inadvertently sabotaging themselves.

Inspired by this post, I decided to write a post for my site, digging deeper and looking specifically at a field that has been traditionally dominated by men: sales. There are studies that show that women are

10 Rules For Brilliant Women – Ready For It?

Principles for owning your brilliance as women. By Tara Sophia Mohr (Founder & Principal, Wise Living)

I coach brilliant women, lots of them. Dedicated, talented, brilliant women.

Most of the time, they don’t know their brilliance. They are certain they “aren’t ready” to take on that next bigger role. They are more attuned to the ways they aren’t qualified than to the ways that they are. They are waiting for someone to validate, promote or discover them.

Sound familiar? It’s time to step up, brilliant women.
