    Here’s my story for you. The San Francisco Surfrider Foundation, is a not-for-profit, but a business none-the-less. We rely heavily on donations from our members, and the volunteer time they provide is the most valued currency we work with. We shifted from a direct mail based CRM model to a completely “green” and online based communications style that’s helped us kick our efforts up several notches.
    Here’s what I mean: Our email system Constant Contact allows us to easily create mailings to rally thousands of the users on our list serve to come out to a beach clean. Our MySpace account has over 100 friends we can send event invites to, share pictures with, and otherwise engage on a normal basis. Our Twitter account (@sfsurfrider w/254 followers) captured the public’s attention after it helped make the Bay Area aware of last winter’s tragic Oil Spill and was featured in a newsletter from the Twitter folks themselves.

    So you can see–these online channels have greatly increased meaningful interaction with our members, and as a result, increased the turnout at beach cleans, fundraising events, and educational efforts to help our organization grow, grow, grow!

    How has online technology helped me grow my business? Well I’m still a startup at this point, but, I met my current website developer through the social media site, twitter.com, and since my site is for mothers, aka http://thesmartmomsnetwork.com, I have consciously befriended a lot of mothers on twitter in an effort to bring them over to my site once it is finished. I have met a lot of the top social media people and many startup site owners through attending and networking at social media events, which, I hope, will translate into my friends/associates helping me to promote my site when it’s live. Most of these events I learned about through the Facebook site. So, to wrap this up, I feel that the online technology of social media sites have helped me to meet people that can be influential to my success, whether they be my developer, networking contacts or future site customers.
