Drumroll Please! Our Next City Meetup Location Is…

This city is poised to be a Midwestern tech hub that could someday give Silicon Valley a run for its money. On August 7th, we’re launching City Meetup in…

By Betsy Mikel (Editor, Women 2.0)

What do baseball superstar Albert Pujols, the iconic American pale lager Budweiser and tech innovator Square all have in common? All became household names as they charged ahead and disrupted the baseball, beer and tech industries, respectively. And all got their start in St. Louis.

St. Louis, Mo. is where Square’s founders Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey met and were inspired to create the credit card reader that makes it easy to accept payments with your iPhone. Though now based in Silicon Valley, McKelvey is passionate about revitalizing St. Louis through its growing tech ecosystem.

And he’s not the only one.

To attract young entrepreneurs, local universities Washington University and Saint Louis University offer top-notch entrepreneurship programs. Programs like Arch Grants offer entrepreneurs $50,000 grants to relocate their startups the city. Capital Innovators also invests $50,000 in startups that are accepted into their 12-week accelerator program. With a low cost of living and growing artist community, St. Louis is already an attractive destination for Millennials. Offering entrepreneurial Millennials incentive to move to the city is icing on the cake.

St. Louis is also the home of established tech companies like MasterCard and emerging startups such as Lockerdome and Hatchbuck. There are also St. Louis-based VC firms such as Cultivation Capital, which has invested in both Lockerdome and Hatchbuck as well as other early-stage startups.

Why We’re Coming to St. Louis

Since Women 2.0 started in 2006, our goal has been to support the next generation of technology leaders. Whether it’s inspiring more diversity in the industry or sharing our expertise with communities of entrepreneurs in new cities, we truly want to help make the future of tech better.

That’s why we’re so excited to launch our monthly networking event, City Meetup, in St. Louis on August 7.

Why should you attend our first St. Louis City Meetup? For one, you can meet our awesome founder and CEO Shaherose Charania! You’ll also hear from MasterCard’s Andrea Soto. Soto was recently appointed as the Chief of Staff to the President of Operations and Technology for MasterCard. She’s been with the company for over 16 years has experience working in several different fields of the tech industry. Don’t miss out on the wonderful knowledge both these women will bring to our first St. Louis City Meetup.

Many thanks to MasterCard for hosting this event. Mastercard recently joined the Women 2.0 family and is working with us to bring City Meetups to more cities around the country and the world.

Grab your tickets now and meet us in St. Louis August 7th!

Also, we’re looking for team members to be apart of our City Meetup St. Louis Team. Interested? Email citymeetup@women2.org!
