Up Next On Lightning Lessons: Mitali Pattnaik (ex Twitter & Google Program Manager – building something new)

A new series where we sit down with our next Lightning Lessons speaker and learn a little more about them.

By Lauren Kim (Events Coordinator, Women 2.0)

This week, Mitali Pattnaik, an ex-Twitter and Google Program Manager working on a new startup venture, tells us a little more about herself. Read on to learn what advice she has for first-time founders, what she envisions the year 2020 would look like, and watch the video above to learn what insights she has on how to be an entrepreneur while working for a larger company.

What is the one thing you wish you knew at the start of your entrepreneurial journey?

I am re-starting my entrepreneurial journey (I have one failed attempt under my belt) and something I know now that I didn’t know then was to only work on an idea that I will actually want to work on every day for many years to come.

What do you love most about your job?

In all my jobs the thing I have loved most is the energy I get from being surrounded by a lot of really smart and good people.

What is your favorite or most inspiring book that you would recommend to founders (and why)?

‘Long Walk to Freedom’ by Nelson Mandela is a must read for everybody, and definitely for entrepreneurs. It is hard to imagine anyone going through that kind of incredibly long and painful journey with constant setbacks to finally arrive at victory. If nothing else, it will put all your own struggles into perspective.

Where is the one place you go to relax and get away from the pressures of startup life?

Anywhere warm (i.e., not San Francisco!) with a good book or running shoes. Thankfully you can drive 10 mins out of SF in any direction and be 20 degrees warmer.

What do you envision the future will look like in the year 2020?

If I could predict the future I would be a lot more successful than I am :). That said I am really hoping 2 things can finally happen:

  1. Self-driving electric cars or rather self-driving Uber’s are commonplace (once cars are self-driving owning them no longer makes sense)

  2. We can finally pay for everything with our phones. (I will miss my Chanel wallet though.)

If you missed it, check out the video above to watch Mitali discuss the points below, and don’t forget to register for upcoming sessions!

Entrepreneurship within larger organizations, sometimes known as intrapreneurship:

  1. Not all entrepreneurship happens at startups.

  2. What’s easier / what’s harder with being an entrepreneur within a company vs. building a startup

  3. How you can use your entrepreneurial skills in your present workplace, whether its a startup or larger company

WHAT IS LIGHTNING LESSONS?

Lightning Lessons is a weekly, live broadcast that takes place every Wednesday, where Women 2.0 sits down with a tech innovator to learn about the game-changing stories of their startup journey and the hard lessons they learned along the way. Take a quick 10 minutes out of your day to learn from the mistakes and feats of your predecessors. Innovators jump in a Google Hangout On Air moderated by a Women 2.0 team member for a bit of story-time and the entire session is broadcast on Google+ for your viewing pleasure. See the full lineup of past and upcoming speakers, and catch up on last week’s session with Anneke Jong (VP of Business Development, Bread)
