I’ve been working on my first baby Taste Savant for the last year or so, and I’m also expecting my first real baby in August of this year. It hasn’t been an easy balance, and I’m sure it’s going to get much more difficult, but I’ve told myself, “Just go with it.”
I’m definitely not the stereotype you see in the tech world these days, and I don’t think I’ll fit that pattern anytime soon, but I’ve been working hard at trying to break the mold and build a successful startup like many of you amazing women in the Women 2.0 community. I’ve learned so much from all of your posts and hope to share some of my own personal takeaways in return.
One of the issues I’ve been struggling with these days is what am I going to do when the baby comes? I get this question from others on a daily basis. And I receive all sorts of unsolicited comments from others either encouraging me that things will be fine or discouraging me saying: “Well your business will surely suffer.” Both men and women are curious about whether I can make this work.
It’s a fair question to ask I guess and I try not to get offended when others are pessimistic about me not being able to balance come Baby K’s arrival. And as my belly is getting bigger, I haven’t been slowing down, but instead have been speeding up. So it begs the question: What will I actually do when this child comes?
How will I balance moving Taste Savant forward with an expanding family? I’ve asked myself this time and time again, and to be honest, I don’t really know. I’m just going to go with it. Does that sound foolish? Silly? It’s not meant to sound like that at all. The fact of the matter is that I don’t really know what to expect when my little one arrives. I know there will be lots of sleepless nights as well as lots of wonderful moments (much like when I first started Taste Savant). But, I don’t know much else! And so, I’ve told myself, “Just go with it.” When I first started out on Taste Savant, like most entrepreneurs, I didn’t really know what I was doing. That feeling is emerging again as my first child is on his way.
There’s no manual on how to do this, believe me I’ve looked. With the startup, I learned by doing and asking others for advice. I made lots of mistakes along the way, but kept going. So why not take the same attitude I did when I first started down this road of entrepreneurship? I’m going to figure it out as I go, learn as I go, work as hard as I can, and just go with it.
