Carsharing marketplace Getaround raised $13.9M in Series A funding last August (investors include Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer). Founded by 24-year old Jessica Scorpio, Getaround wants to change the way billions of people literally *get around*.

The cleantech startup leverages collaborative consumption for a more sustainable future. The transportation solution addressed the challenge verbalized by Google co-founder Larry Page at Singularity University: “How do you positively impact one billion people in 10 years?”

“Instead of adding new cars into the world, we decided to maximize what is already available,” said founder Jessica Scorpio. Getaround. With the iPhone app or website, people who want to get around can search for cars nearby and rent anything from a Prius to a Tesla. The prices and availability are set by car owners who choose who can rent the car. Rentals are covered by Getaround’s $1M primary insurance policy backed by Berkshire Hathaway.

Jessica hatched the idea in the summer of 2009 at Singularity University and worked on it for a few years, then pitched Getaround onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt in May 2011. The three-day event saw 32 startup pitches, after which Getaround was named the winner of TechCrunch Disrupt NYC 2011!

Disrupting transportation doesn’t happen overnight. Jessica shared her story about “what drives a startup to succeed – the Getaround story” on Women 2.0 last year. And on Thursday, we will welcome her onstage at the Women 2.0 Conference 2013 as a panelist on the panel about disrupting reality for a billion people.
