Katie and Esther discuss Russ’s interview with Women 2.0

Original broadcast: September 02, 2009 – 6:37 minutes

In this podcast, Katie and Esther dissect the recent BusinessMakers interview with Shaherose and Angie, co-founders of Women 2.0. Podcast summary available after the jump.
“It’s really phenomenal that these women have day jobs that they love… and then they do this on the side. They live in Silicon Valley where if you want to be a success, you don’t do anything half-ass. They hold real deal day jobs, and then to jump and create this growing organization. This is very exciting and probably a good lesson for both men and women — maybe they have a job they already love — the fact is you don’t have to land major venture capital in order to get on with your dream already! Just start — and don’t quit your day job — make this a secondary thing you do in your spare time, and if you love it and you’re passionate about it, you’ll find the time for it. People say I don’t have time, but you don’t have to watch TV! That’s right, you don’t need to watch those ER episodes or reruns of 90210. You can actually sit and create your business plan — and the business you want on the side — without quitting your job. And who knows, your side job becomes your full time job. And that’s the dream, right?

And by connecting with an organization like Women 2.0 for the ladies out there that have a dream, they have this magnificent idea of what the future should hold for them career-wise, this is the ultimate way of not only just being in the same room with women who know what they are going through, cuz most of those ladies are going to have their day jobs are probably moms, are probably on the PTA and do yoga and have all these responsibilities, AND they’re rocking the world with this new venture. It’s a support group, it’s a support system. It really is. They can help you kick some butt.

It was amazing what Angie Chang said about her ultimate dream for Women 2.0. Let’s replay that. Angie Chang said, “My personal goal is to create more visibility for women in technology. So if we can provide Web 2.0 Expo or the next TC 50 with a top notch woman entrepreneur/co-founder and have her on the cover of Fortune magazine or INC magazine, then that would be my dream. My dream is to have more visible women in technology, to increase the status of women, and to encourage younger women to go into programming to start more companies.”

So here is an organization that not only wants to help ladies get in the business world, but they have their sights set on something even larger. They want women to be a much larger part of the technology community, they want them speaking at these large conferences that are typically male-dominated, they want to reach out to younger girls to get into programming and software development. Tech is not a women’s world, and this is definitely a step in the right direction. Women 2.0 is making it their world.
