    Get Thee To A Hackathon!

A high-pressure cooker for startup ideas, many women have attended – and won – hackathons.

    By Angie Chang (Co-Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Women 2.0)

When I visit New York next weekend, I will be attending the Hack’n Jill hackathon where there is one woman for every man. And while I am a web designer/developer, non-technical entrepreneurs are encouraged to attend hackathons such as Startup Weekends and AT&T Hackathons. In San Francisco alone, there are two hackathons this coming weekend – a solar hackathon and a RadiumOne hackathon.

There is no better or faster way to move forward on a website or mobile app idea than to go to a hackathon. Hackathons are usually weekend events where designers, developers, marketers and business people get together with the common goal

How to Build Award-Winning Apps at Hackathons

By Bess Ho (Mobile Architect, Archimedes Ventures)

My winning luck in hackathons has been generating interest and curiosity from my peers, so I’ve been asked to blog about making it at major competitions and hackathons.

I won the “Best Healthcare” award at my first iOS Dev Camp in 2009, then I won again at iPad Dev Camp in 2010. I won at Muther Hackathon a month ago before I entered iOS Dev Camp 2011. These are not the only awards I have earned in my career. I mention these competitions because these mobile events are recognized widely by a fast-growing industry with the best

5 Free Passes to Silicon Valley Web Builder’s June 29 Gamification Best Practices Event

By Bess Ho (Founder, Silicon Valley Web Builder)

Gamification is a fast growing trend in web and mobile app design. Gamification gained popularity since SXSWi 2010 after the successful launch of Foursquare and Gowalla — two check-in platforms to use achievement and badges to engage users. For decades, traditional industries have successfully implemented Gamification strategy in Frequent Programs and Nike Plus.

Gamification is a design approach to apply game elements to engage users to share or interact in activities and to induce users to accomplish targeted business goals. In short, gamification is also defined as application of game mechanics to non-game environment. As social network giant Facebook has restricted the viral channels such as limiting the number of friends you can invite daily on each app and removing the notification feature, many developers are exploring using the game mechanics to increase user engagement, in addition to the social layer.

Announcing Udemy Partnership: Save 60% on Bess Ho’s Online 4-Week Class on Creating iPhone Apps

    By Gagan Biyani (Co-Founder, Udemy)

Coding may seem daunting, like some wild black magic that only the select few super engineers that majored in Computer Science understand. It may seem hard to get started. Where do I go? Do I buy a book? But what if I have questions or get stuck?

Have no fear. Bess Ho is here.

Sign up to Learn to Build iPhone & iPad Apps in 4 Weeks with Bess Ho — This online course includes 60+ lectures, 17 videos, source codes and hands-on exercises for each section.

I had the pleasure of watching Bess Ho teach a class one day. She had 40 students at the 500 Startups headquarters in Mountain View, CA for a class titled “How to build an iPhone Application”. The class was only 6 hours long. I came in thinking “These guys and girls must be programmers, right? I mean they went to school and learned things like string theory and machine learning?

WRONG. Our students were everyday Joes and Janes. They had philosophy degrees and business backgrounds. Many of them were older, younger, fatter, thinner. They had nice clothes on and combed their hair in the morning. They came in with NO CODING EXPERIENCE. Many of them had never even seen a line of JavaScript. Bess had the class whip out their laptops and a short 6 hours (with 2 hours for lunch/break) later, Bess called out “OK, who wants to demo their application?”

The business executives, consultants, and marketers in the room went up one by one. They showed their iPhone applications on-screen. They worked! Read students’ reviews of Bess’s class here.

Check out Bess Ho’s class in this Udemy deal of the week to learn how for only $99 over 4 weeks (regular price is $250) — Learn at your own pace and convenience!

What You Can Make in a 6-Hour iPhone App Intro Class

By Bess Ho (Mobile Architect, Archimedes Ventures)

I regularly teach classes on iPhone development for all levels. Here are some students who took a class called “iOS SDK for Beginners”, a 6-hour class held in Mountain View. The next class is on “iOS SDK for Intermediates – Design Concepts” this Saturday, May 28 in Mountain View.

Ayesha Ahmed is Co-Founder and CEO of Flocking Apps, creating iPhone and iPad applications. Ayesha had no Objective-C / iOS experience or any coding background outside of creating basic HTML pages. She took the one-day iOS SDK Development class “to get a better understanding of the technical aspects of iPhone App development. Having this coding experience has helped me develop a much deeper understanding of the complexities of the app world. At the end of the class, my teammates and I collaborated to create our first app.”
