Sponsored: Women Who Code Event; You Won’t Be the Only Woman in the Room

Register for a Venture Capital Investment Panel with Women Who Code taking place tonight, Oct. 8!

By Rose Wang and Alaina Percival (Women Who Code)

Complete the sentence. I’m often the only, or one of few women in ______. Ever feel this way?

Growing up I was the only girl in my advanced math class and probably the only girl who assembled her own computer in her entire middle school. I know, I was a bit dorky, but somehow the boys who did so (who were also my friends) were seen as slightly less dorky. As a adult, I found myself as one of few women who worked as an investor at a Hedgefund. Turns out I was the only one at my firm and would frequently get mistaken by visitors, and even the Fedex carrier as an assistant (ha!). So why is it often the case that very few females are represented in traditionally male roles? Even in entrepreneurship, where disruption and defying boundaries are the order of the day – women are under represented. Since when was entrepreneurship a guy thing?

In fact, the question of why there are so few female entrepreneurs is often debated. Is it because girls are not encouraged to take risks or to develop the technical skills necessary to create a successful startup? Or are women simply less confident than their male counterparts even if they are similarly qualified? Better yet, do women hold themselves back?

There are many other theories – but our focus as Women Who Code is on addressing the issue though execution. As corny as it may sound, let’s educate smart and driven women on technical skills, investing and starting their own companies so that they become fearless. Fearless to try. Fearless to fail. Fearless to succeed.

Women Who Code is holding a roundtable of four industry leaders in Venture Capital. Speakers include Trae Vassallo Senior General Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Aileen Lee Founder of Cowboy VC and Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Heidi Roizen Partner at Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and Megan Quinn Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. These experts, some of whom are former entrepreneurs themselves will offer their insights on the diligence and investment process, current funding trends, and offer our audience some good old fashioned advice. It’s a great opportunity to learn about what it takes to get funding if you’re a start-up or get your feet wet even if you’re just thinking about starting your own business. Who’s knows, maybe you’ll get inspired.

The event is tonight and we hope to see many of you there. Tickets are still on sale and can be purchased here.
